When
my sisters and I were girls, we would ask my dad questions over
and over, like, “What instrument did you play in school?
What’s your favorite color?” He would always give
us an answer we thought was hilarious like, “I played
the ear drums” and “Sky blue pink is my favorite
color”.
When
we grew up, my sisters and my close friends had children of
their own. I adore them. I never knew that you could love
another person so much until I held my niece, Michaela, for
the first time. I’ve been writing songs all my life,
since I was about 8 years old. Seeing the world through the
eyes of my nieces and nephews has been incredibly inspiring:
Emma sees diamonds in the snow, Vincent Van Gogh paints beautiful
sunflowers, trains make music, fireflies sleep all day. Images
were given to me like gifts that turned into songs.
“Sleepy Town”
is a collection of lullabies for all ages that is a love letter
to my family. It is through them that I rediscovered the wonder
of my own childhood. And
now I see that “sky blue pink” truly is a real
and lovely color. My dad wasn’t telling us a joke. I
hope that you and your family will enjoy these songs as much
as I loved writing and singing them.
