About “Pictures of a Heart”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 22, 2026:  Rochester New York-based singer-songwriter Annie Wells is celebrating the release today of her extraordinary new album Pictures Of A Heart. Wells, backed by a rotating group of stalwart musicians that maintain an effortless groove, has perfected a distinctive, sophisticated jazz-steeped sound.  The album showcases a series of songs that explore themes of love, loss, betrayal and tragedy that all manage to uplift through their musicality inspired by an unerring belief in the transformative power of love. Each of the seven songs tells a different love story, but not in the way you’d expect. Wells shows us how love takes on many forms and meanings: from hard-won, enduring love in the first track, “True Blue Boy” to transcendent love, beyond mortality on the final track, “Blue Aeroplane”, written by her friend, David Ripton. She wrote five of the seven tracks and included the dreamy, “Radio Silence” by Christopher Earl Zajkowski.

At the core of the album, Annie’s song “1000 Hearts” threads together the central theme of Pictures of a Heart: that love is a transformative force—one that can hold sorrow and beauty at the same time. With its gospel undercurrent, Annie wanted the song to feel like a moment in church, so she invited Rochester musician Alan Murphy to lay down a soulful organ part. Cindy Tag added luminous soprano saxophone and airy flute passages that lift the song’s spirit.

The song was inspired by the tragedy of Trevyan Rowe, a 14‑year‑old boy with autism who wandered away from his school unnoticed. In response, a thousand community members came together to search for him. Despite their efforts, Trevyan was not found in time; he had fallen into the Genesee River. The song carries the aching sentiment: “If only he knew” how many people cared.

Annie reflects, “My heart was broken. The community’s collective heart was broken. This song conveys both grief and the poignance of compassion that arrived too late. Trevyan taught us ‘the way and the power of love,’ a phrase I borrowed from Civil Rights leader and Congressman John Lewis’s teachings on love‑in‑action.  Lewis professed love as a way of being and as a power that can change the world. More than ever, these days, we need to embrace kindness and empathy.”

All seven heartfelt songs were produced by Ken Frank.  Appearing on the album are longtime musical collaborator Phil Marshall (Colorblind James, La La Land), with his spirited guitar work, Frank on electric bass, Dave Arenius on upright bass, Melissa Davies on cello, Mike Kaupa on trumpet and flugelhorn and Roy Marshall on drums.
